2 Dr. Allison Sekuler, Vice-President, Research, and the Sandra A. Rotman Chair at Baycrest Baycrest researchers continue to lead the charge in tackling dementia and transforming the aging experience through their work at one of Canada's most research- intensive healthcare organizations. We're thrilled that Dr. Howard Chertkow, lead on the $31.5 million-grant for the Canadian Consortium for Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA), will be joining the Rotman Research Institute as our inaugural Chair in Cognitive Neurology and Innovation, Director of the Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, and Director of our developing Clinical Trials Unit. With Dr. Chertkow's arrival, research at Baycrest will continue growing its efforts towards translating our basic research findings into ways to improve care for our clients at the bedside. The Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, along with the new Katz Interprofessional Centre, will amplify a cross-campus approach to research with scientists, clinicians and front-line staff working side-by-side to help older adults live life to the fullest. The new Clinical Trials Unit will provide Baycrest clients access to groundbreaking drug and non-drug interventions in dementia, while creating an additional revenue stream to research. The CCNA Headquarters and National Research Centre, which is leading the largest Canadian study in dementia exploring who is at risk of developing dementia, how early it can be detected and what tests are most effective at detecting it, will be moving to Baycrest. Complementing this appointment, our Rotman Research Institute (RRI) scientists will usher in a new era of cutting- edge brain health research, thanks to a $3.6 million investment from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund. This funding will support upgrades to the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) machines, which enable our researchers to solve the mysteries of the human brain, pursue unique ways to protect brain health during aging, and diagnose dementia earlier. New business models are being explored to improve the sustainability of our imaging research. We are also thrilled to welcome a leading New Zealand memory researcher, Dr. Donna Rose Addis, who will join us in September 2018 as a Canada 150 Research Chair, and we congratulate our newly appointed Canada Research Chairs, Drs. Jean Chen and Jed Meltzer. These research awards have a total value of $3.45 million. Through our synergies and partnerships with the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovations (CABHI), Baycrest will continue to transform how we care for older adults. Research is being integrated across campus through CABHI- supported programs and other initiatives. Through CABHI, we are also connecting foundational brain research with clinical testing, which leads to innovations for healthy aging. This cycle continues to inspire additional questions about the fundamental mechanisms of the brain and so on. Industry and other healthcare organizations are encouraged to partner with Baycrest on brain health and aging research and solutions to help create, improve, and validate innovations aimed at enhancing the health, wellness and quality of life of individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Thanks to opportunities provided by CABHI's competitive grant programs, Baycrest scientists, clinicians and staff are strengthening partnerships with industry and non-profit organizations to inspire future areas of research and sharing their expertise and services amongst a wider audience. Research at Baycrest is a team sport, and we will continue to grow our research efforts and collaborate with groups on campus, in Canada and across the globe to address our rapidly changing demographics and the looming public health crisis brought on by dementia.
