7 Springtime is synonymous with rebirth, so it's the perfect time to open and enjoy the newly renovated spaces at the Terraces of Baycrest. As part of a $30 million makeover, in the coming weeks, renovations to the 9th, 10th and 11th floors will be complete. Units on these floors have been designated for assisted living and memory care. The other floors will continue to be independent retirement living floors and will feature new living, community and activity spaces. Additional upgrades include improved common areas and entryways, a new health centre, a refreshed dining room and kitchen, and improved facilities for those who require greater assistance. THE TERRACES OF BAYCREST $30 MILLION MAKEOVER As we look towards Baycrest's next 100 years, we are imagining a different future — a future that leverages new technologies to improve the residential experience and the quality of life of all of our clients. Through the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), Baycrest has identified many promising solutions that will be deployed in two pilot suites in the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged this year. Focusing on four key areas, including innovations that support cognition and mental health, better mobility, greater independence and quality care, Baycrest's "Smart Rooms of the Future" will feature voice-controlled technologies like the Alexa- powered Amazon Echo, innovative lift equipment, intuitive lighting, video chat technology, a smart toilet and many other solutions. SMART ROOMS AND THE FUTURE OF LONG-TERM CARE Helping Baycrest save money and reduce its carbon footprint, the Redevelopment and Support Services department has been replacing traditional bulbs and fluorescent lighting with new energy-efficient ones. These new lights don't get as hot as traditional lights, are built to last and save energy costs. Over the past year, Baycrest has also made significant upgrades to entryways across the entire campus. New heating, cooling and ventilation units are now helping to better control indoor climates all year round and reduce our energy consumption. ECO-FRIENDLY IMPROVEMENTS Wondering what Baycrest will look like as we ring in our next centennial anniversary in 2118? Our Redevelopment and Support Services department is envisioning an environment that looks nothing like the hospitals and long-term care homes of years gone by. Following new design principles, Baycrest will evolve to be more "home-like," accessible, activity-focused, flexible, and empowering. Through these design principles, Baycrest will provide a greater sense of comfort and security to all clients, while keeping them mentally and physically engaged through social connections, creativity and innovations. PLANNING FOR BAYCREST'S NEXT 100 YEARS
