BrainMatters FALL/WINTER 2018 11 In 2013, Stan's Club was created for the 18th B2B Chai Ride to honour Stan's years of dedication to the event. Members pledged or donated a minimum of $10,000 to support the work of Baycrest. Later, his family and friends set a $1 million fundraising goal to create a state-of-the-art custom gym in the soon-to-be- built Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness. It will be named Stan's Gym in honour of Stan. His son, Jon, recalls that if Stan had his way, he would have named the new gym Sam's Gym in honour of his mentor at the Baycrest Foundation, Sam Ruth. "Stan's Gym was planned as a surprise for Stan. A campaign to honour him is exactly the kind of thing he would never have wanted. But we told him when it was too late to back out," Jon says. "He was touched by it, because the gym hit on all the things that he cared about the most – helping elderly people and doing it through exercise. Those two things were at the intersection of all he was passionate about. " Anyone who had the pleasure and honour of meeting Stan will recall a man who was soft-spoken, gentle and generous with his time. He was also simultaneously iron- willed and passionate about his love for Baycrest, and what he believed it could achieve in the field of aging and brain health for older adults. According to his wife of 50 years, Susan Feldman, Stan's passion for Baycrest never waned. "It was something he believed in thoroughly and from his heart," she says. "He felt it was important to make a contribution for older adults; particularly out of a strong respect for elderly people, which derived from his relationship with his grandfather, Beryl, whom he idolized. His grandfather was kind, thoughtful and had a heart for people." His passion for his philanthropic work was only exceeded by his love for his family. He was a doting grandfather to his granddaughters Mia and Noa. Stan was a proud father and father-in-law to his daughter Amy, his son Jon and daughter-in-law Shlomit. Then there was his love for his wife and life partner of more than 50 years, Susan; together, they were a formidable team and force for good in the field of brain health and aging, and the community at large. Stan set the bar high for all fundraisers who come after him. His legacy will last for the ages. Stan Feldman, z'l (1940 - 2018). May his memory be a blessing.
