BAYCREST CENTRE FOR LEARNING, RESEARCH & INNOVATION IN LONG- TERM CARE (CLRI) The Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care trials innovative experiential learning approaches to train current and future healthcare providers to meet the needs of long- term care residents. Team Essentials, the flagship training program, fosters leading team practices in the prevention of unnecessary emergency transfers, care co-ordination for dementia, engagement of families in care and interprofessional competencies. One example of innovative mobile learning designed by our team is a Sensory Observation System (SOS) gamified app which teaches students and healthcare providers to quickly recognize, prioritize and communicate changes in the condition of the frail elderly. This micro-learning app has been shown to improve clinical decision- making. DIVISION OF TRAINING AND SIMULATION The Division of Training and Simulation develops educational products that are offered locally, nationally and internationally. The team produces unique and exciting products, such as videos and a Virtual Reality app for dementia simulations, as well as an online learning module about responsive behaviours in dementia – all geared to the training of healthcare professionals and family members who care for older adults. ELEARNING AND THE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS) The Learning Management System at Baycrest enables employees, volunteers, students and members of the community to train on a variety of topics, including patient safety, privacy, the use of hearing aids and communicating after a stroke by using interactive online eLearning modules. An online version of Baycrest's successful Memory and Aging Program was completed recently, and the team is also collaborating with Canada's National Ballet School to train instructors on methods for teaching dance to residents of long-term care homes. Materials produced by the LMS, which is funded by the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), can be accessed by older adults and healthcare professionals around the world. 40 For more information about training and learning modules that are available through Baycrest, please call 416-785-2500 ext. 2363.
