Baycrest Volunteer Handbook 25 • A client who stands up from a sitting position should remain standing for a moment before they begin walking. This will allow the blood a chance to circulate, preventing light- headedness • Those who suffer from vision or hearing loss are often anxious or disoriented. Again, stay close by offering assistance and emotional support Client safety Volunteers perform responsibilities in a manner that supports Baycrest's safety culture. Volunteers: • Recognize and respond in accordance with established policies and processes • Report and communicate to their supervisor all client safety events or incidents such as falls, suspected abuse, agitation or aggression, exit-seeking, and eating and nutrition incidents Wandering clients For safety reasons, some clients need to be accompanied by a caregiver such as a family member or private companion when they leave their units. These clients may wear an electronic band that can be detected at exit points including unit doors, stairwell doors and elevators in the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged, as well as the main ground floor exits. At each point there are alarms or locks that are activated when a cli ent using the wander-prevention system is nearby. These alarms or locks can be deactivated by entering a code on a keypad at the location. The code can be obtained at the nursing station. Please exercise caution when escorting a client
