BrainMatters •Fall/Winter 2023 • 3 Thanks to a generous donation from the Home Society, Baycrest has been able to fund several exciting new programs and technologies that are enhancing quality of life and care for our residents and clients. One of the key initiatives is the TEA (Technology Enablement for Older Adults) digital literacy program, which teaches older adults how to use technology to stay connected. Through eight weeks of instruction and practice, participants learn to use devices and apps for communication, entertainment and accessing services. With the Home Society's support, Baycrest has delivered TEA to 28 learners so far, empowering them to engage with today's digital world. On the therapeutic front, music therapists are using Soundbeam, a "touch-free" musical device that turns physical movements into sounds and music. This technology has had a positive effect on residents with mental health and cognitive challenges, allowing them to focus on the music and their body movements and reducing certain behavioural symptoms such as agitation. To support those with behavioural challenges, the Home Society funded a package of innovative solutions for Baycrest's Transitional Behavioural Support Unit (TBSU). Smart speakers facilitate music therapy to soothe or engage clients. Indoor gardening promotes sensory awareness and homelike aesthetics. In addition, the interactive sensory wall panels provide tactile stimulation and distraction. Metrics show consistent daily use of these new tools by TBSU residents and staff. Additional highlights include virtual reality (VR) systems for immersive recreation experiences, Motiview virtual cycling software, senior-friendly Claris tablets to stay connected, Otoscan ear scanning for personalized hearing solutions and a Music Share for Seniors program that creates personalized playlists to reduce isolation. Thanks to forward-thinking community partners like the Home Society, Baycrest continues to explore new ways to deliver personalized, engaging care that enhances mind, body and spirit. Their generous support allows us to pilot and evaluate innovative programs and technologies that can truly make a difference in our residents' health and quality of life.
