13 Rotman Research Institute 25 Years of Impact | 7/15/2014 activities are considered highly concentrated on the neuroscience field. The RRI has maintained a high specialization index in all the SIR reports analyzed. The highest Spec. Index in the SIR global report is 0.99 and is usually assigned to research institutes such as the European Southern Observatory in Poland, Max Planck Institut fur Astronomie (sub) in Germany, National Institute for Sub-atomic Physics in Netherlands, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in USA. The lowest Spec. Index reported ranges from 0.30 to 0.50 and these values are mostly assigned to universities since they tend to have a broader scientific coverage. Figure 11. RRI specialization indexes According to the SIR Global 2013 report, covering the 2007-2011 period, there are two Canadian research institutes with specialization index that are comparable to the RRI's Spec. Table 9 shows these Canadian institutions, as well as the Canadian institution with the highest Spec. Index. Table 9. Canadian Institutions with high specialization index Institution Spec.
