14 RTC Annual Report 2015 - 2016 In spring 2015, members of the RTC steering committee (Dr . Rosanne Aleong, Aggie Bacopulos, Renante Rondina) formed an integrated educational partnership with Baycrest Organizational Effectiveness (Joel Borgida, Ritesh Nambiar) to develop a five - part wo rkshop series focused on developing leadership skills among research trainees. Specific c ontent was designed to address research leadership challenges based upon an environmental scan survey conducted in summer 2015. The 5 - week Research Leadership Series consisted of: Research Leadership Series W orkshop Instructor s Workshop Title Introduction to leadership Strategic communication Leading effective meetings Managing team dynamics Ritesh Nambiar, Dr. Rosanne Aleong, Joel Borgida, Aggie Bacopulos, Renante Rondina*, Baycrest Managing change 1. Introduction to l eadership • introduced di fferent aspects important in a leader; • identified experiences in research that are influenced by effective leadership; • described different leadership styles. 2. Strategic c ommunication • provided strategies on how to develop and execute effective communicat ions ; • helped trainees understand pitfalls to avoid when communicating with others; • described communication strategies to influence others with an idea or proposal. 3. Leading effective m eetings • identified when and why meetings become ineffective and how to avoid these problems ; • described strategies to operate and lead a diverse set of meetings to enhance productivity and effectiv eness in a research environment; • introduced creative and inclusive techniques for decision making and problem solving during meeti ngs. 4. Managing team d ynamics • identified the characteristics that set apart high - performing and effective teams; • explore d key characteristics of high performance teams including goal setting, decision making, communication, and team leadership; • described different conflict resolution strategies. 5. Managing c hange • identified the steps involved in making and maintaining changes ; • explore d the various roles involved when changes are made; • identified strategies to employ and avoid when managing change. * Baycrest trainee
