Baycrest - End of Life Volunteer Manual 60 • Ask for help when you need it – from your supervisor or other members of the team. Asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not failure • Give timely support, encouragement and praise to other members of the team, and learn to accept support and praise in return • Value the relationships you have. Say the things that are important to say and express the feelings that are important to share • Get to know your own strengths and inner resources so you feel comfortable with yourself. Be aware of your feelings and how you experience them – then you will be able to allow others their feelings of anger, hurt and sadness without rushing in to comfort, challenge, change, defend or retaliate • Learn to recognize the difference between complaining that relieves stress and complaining that reinforces stress • Surround yourself with growing things, life, colour and creativity • Let off steam emotionally and physically regularly • Use your sense of humour frequently • Change your routine often and your tasks when you can • Practice saying "no" so that you can set limits when you need to • Become familiar with your own signs of stress and develop ways to deal with them • Take time to step back from what is happening to gain perspective. Be open to new learning, approaches and values
